'Britney Jean' by Britney Spears Album Review

Britney Spears is one of the world's biggest pop stars, and with a career spanning over 15 years there isn't much that she hasn't done. Britney is prepping her newest show Piece of Me which is set to be one of Vegas' most elaborate residencies in history with Brit performing there for two years at the newly-renovated-just-for-Britney Planet Hollywood. Backing that show is her eighth studio album Britney Jean which she has been touting as her "most personal record" to date. Fans have been wanting a more soulful album from the Pop Princess as her three most recent albums (Blackout, Circus, and Femme Fatale) have largely been dominated by Max Martin and Dr. Luke factory-produced pop clichés. With Britney Jean, Spears delivers an interesting mix of club bangers and soulful ballads which she has not done since 2003's In The Zone. Britney Jean takes the diversity of In The Zone, mixes it with the transitional theme and mood of Britney and throws in the club bangers from Blackout to make the perfect concoction. This is Britney's first album released in her thirties and it's clear from some of the songs that she's in a new stage in her life. She has nothing left to prove with this album as she's proved she can do it all, but this album is largely a test to show the world that she does have excellent vocals and she's not just a robot. I think it delivers in all respects, and Britney Jean joins In The Zone and Blackout as the Holy Trinity of her discography.

1. Alien - 9/10

The album starts off with the long-awaited William Orbit produced track 'Alien'. Fans have wanted Britney to work with Orbit for years, and they have in the past, but Orbit's songs have never made the final cut. At long last Brit's management team were smart and gave us what we've been waiting for. The eerie opener takes us into the depths of space where we feel isolated as Britney sings about how lonely the world of pop superstardom makes her feel. It's a reflection of her life in the public eye, and it's one of the most beautiful songs on the album. The sonically strange tune gives us our first glimpse into Britney's personal life, and it's what we've waited years to hear.

2. Work Bitch - 7/10

The lead single from the album is something that never really hit the mark when it was initially released. Fans were expecting their queen's "most personal album" and then were given a song that is meant to be her song for all the gay boys out there. It's a banger of a tune with a sick video, but it was just not the right choice to kick off the era. There are so many other songs that were more worthy of being the lead single on Britney Jean. That being said, my love of 'Work Bitch' is still as big as ever and it's such a fun one.

3. Perfume - 6/10

'Perfume' is the Sia-penned track that was teased for a while and eventually became the second single. Again, I think it was the wrong choice, but this song really shows off how strong Brit's vocals are. She's clearly been working on them recently, and it really aids in getting the emotion across. Compared to the rest of the album's mid-tempos it's quite underwhelming, and will.i.am's nonsense production completely ruins it.
4. It Should Be Easy (feat. will.i.am) - 5/10

Basically 'Scream & Shout' 2.0, will.i.am just couldn't resist tainting Britney's record with this one. Will crafted a club banger that is actually quite good and the EDM sound is actually awesome, but the amount of processing he put Brit's vocals through is completely unnecessary. Her voice is so distorted it's ridiculous. And also, will.i.am sings so much on this song that you'd think it was his. The track could have been amazing, but of course Will took it too far like he usually does.

5. Tik Tik Boom (feat. T.I.) - 9/10

And thus begins the Holy Trinity of bangerz. Think of 'Tik Tik Boom' as '(I Got That) Boom Boom' from In The Zone's more mature sister. The song is this great urban track that has Britney singing about the countdown to her orgasm. Yep, this song is all about sex and it's as hot as you would expect. Plus, T.I. completely slays his verse and makes the song so very dirty. At the end she does a vocal run that sounds like it came straight off of the Oops!...I Did It Again album which is just beyond impressive. It's a highlight of the album and could easily be the third single,

6. Body Ache - 10/10

The David Guetta-produced 'Body Ache' is just so damn good. It was originally a mid-tempo but the fans were clamoring for more up-tempos so the producers swapped it, and I'm actually glad they did. It's a total club jam, and it's all about Britney dancing so long and hard that her body begins aching. What I love most about this song, though, is how strong her vocals are. Vocally, she goes hard on this song, and at the end she does a vocal run that sounds like it came straight off of the Oops!...I Did It Again album. This is everything done right.

7. Til It's Gone - 10/10

Did you ever think she could craft a song as good as 'Toxic' or 'Gimme More' again? Well, neither did I, but 'Til It's Gone' is easily the best song she has released since the Blackout era. It is a massive EDM/trap-infused tune that features this incredible hyperbolic beat that gets the blood pumping and the heart racing. It's out of this world, and the song just keeps propelling forward. Britney slows things down during the bridge with some of her signature "oohs," but then under her command the beat escalates once again finishing the song in a speed-induced rush that leaves you breathless and utterly exhausted but in the best way possible. If this isn't released as a single then Team Britney will have made their biggest mistake ever.
8. Passenger - 10/10

This is one of the few tracks that leaked ahead of release, but I'm glad it did because Diplo's production easily makes it one of my favorite tracks on the album. It marks a departure in Britney's sound because it's clear that this has a deep spiritual meaning, and being penned by Katy Perry (hence the religious undertones) and Sia, the song veers into pop-rock territory that Britney originally wanted to be in when she began her career over 15 years ago. It features fantastic lyrics, a beautiful sound and gorgeous vocals on Brit's part. If anyone doubted Britney's vocals, just have them listen to the song and they'll eat their words.

9. Chillin' With You (feat. Jamie Lynn Spears) - 8/10

If there has been any duet that Britney fans have waiting their entire lives to hear, it's the one with her little sister Jamie Lynn, and that's what we have finally been treated to. Upon first listen I was very confused. The song starts off with guitar so I thought it was going to be country, but then it went very adult contemporary pop before turning into an R&B/hip-hop tune during the chorus. The song alternates between these three sounds in a very bizarre manner, but in some weird way it all works. Jamie's vocals on this song are fantastic, and I actually might say that she outshines her big sis. Their vocals mesh well and the song is so beautiful and heartfelt because it's a great sibling love fest. How can you not fall in love with this song?

10. Don't Cry - 9/10

Rounding out the very short album is the ballad 'Don't Cry' that is probably the most raw and personal we have heard Britney in years. The emotion in this song actually brings tears to my ears but also warms my heart in the best way possible. It's everything and more that I could have wished to hear from my childhood idol. I also think it rounds out the album perfectly because it shows off her strong vocals, the raw emotion and the beautiful pop melody that slightly morphs into the pop-rock sound she has toyed with. It's Britney at her best, and if she performs this at her Piece of Me show I may turn into a puddle of mush.

Tracks to Check Out: 'Alien', 'Tik Tik Boom', 'Body Ache', 'Til It's Gone', 'Passenger', 'Don't Cry'

Overall Rating: 8.5/10

'Rap God' Music Video by Eminem

Eminem's newly released The Marshall Mathers LP 2 was one of the most highly-anticipated releases of this year, and in all rights it lived up to its name. The album is littered with incredible tunes that justify why Em is indeed a 'Rap God'. I've been addicted to the song ever since it was released, and today we got the video for it which pushes it to a level I didn't think it were possible to obtain. The video is incredible and stunning beyond belief. There's so much going on it's almost hard to write about. The video opens with Eminem playing on pop culture and creating an exaggerated reality which is one of his fortes before moving on to seeing an Eminem robot being constructed. We then venture to scenes of him rapping underground with his homies whisking us away to 8 Mile where we're reminded of his roots, and then he moves in an out of portals that emanate from the tubes in the Super Mario games. After all that, the Eminembot comes to life and Em begins levitating and walking on water, embodying the Rap God status. Eminem is a true artist, and this video puts all his other competitors to shame.

'#Selfie (LIV at Midnight Edit)' by The Chainsmokers

The Chainsmokers are a DJ duo that I have been covering for a few months now with their remixes of BANKS' 'Change' and Icona Pop's 'Girlfriend', but now they have just released their very first original tune. Even though they don't consider it to be their first single because of the very comic and inane nature of the song, it's still a fun track to dance to in the clubs. If they were to film a video for this I could see it going viral. Basically it's about a girl who can't decide which filter to use for her Instagram selfie because let's face it, a selfie is the most important thing we do nowadays. Am I right? Whether or not '#Selfie' is a tried and true single, it ultimately doesn't matter because The Chainsmokers wanted to entertain and that's exactly what they did.

I'm back in Connecticut spending the holiday with my grandparents and of course stuffing myself with yummy food. I hope you guys are spending time with loved ones and enjoying your break from work and school. I know the release of Britney Jeanis making everything ten times better ;) Enjoy your holiday and don't forget to watch Lady Gaga and The Muppets Holiday Spectacular tonight! There are going to be some awesome performances with Elton John and RuPaul that you aren't going to want to miss. May your Thanksgiving be fabulous this year!

'Ghost' by Chelsea Lankes

Chelsea Lankes is a Nashville native who has been releasing music for the past couple years, but she hasn't received any mainstream recognition. She has a beautiful indie synth-pop sound that makes her stick out from the crowd. At times she reminds me of Betty Who, another one of my favorite indie artists at the moment, with her soft and sweet yet strong and confidant voice. Her new single 'Ghost' is a beautiful understated tune that, as the name suggests, is entrancing and atmospheric. The production is simple and smooth blending nicely with Chelsea's vocals. She will be releasing her new EP Lucid in February 2014 so be on the lookout for that because it's sure to not disappoint.

'One More Sleep' Music Video by Leona Lewis

Leona Lewis has had a fledgling career over the past few years, but one thing's for certain: she makes fantastic Christmas music. A few weeks ago, Leona released her first Christmas single 'One More Sleep', and today we were treated with the release of the music video. In this joyously fun clip, Leona arrives at a cottage in the woods as the snow is falling and decorates the place top to bottom before her friends show up. They all hang out, have dinner and exchange gifts, and then they get into a massive snowball fight. Basically it's just celebrating the holiday spirit and it's a cute video. I'm really excited to listen to Leona's album Christmas, With Love because I'm sure it's going to be fantastic.

'Just Another Night' Music Video by Icona Pop

Even though their debut album This Is... Icona Popwas a flop in my book, the Swedish duo is still one of my favorite acts at the moment. They have now released the music video for their latest single 'Just Another Night' and it's filmed in the style of old French films which I love. The video sees the girls with their respective male partners leading different lives, and then there are shots of them together and having fun. It's a simple video, but the aesthetic is absolutely gorgeous. Icona Pop are one of the hottest acts of 2013, and I don't think anyone can argue with that.

'That Christmas Song' by Detox, Willam and Vicky Vox

The infamous trio of drag queens, including Season 4 and Season 5 contestants of RuPaul's Drag Race, are at it again delivering us their very first holiday tune. Detox, Willam and Vicky Vox who go by the moniker DWV released their new single 'That Christmas Song' today after having been delayed due to technical issues. In classic DWV fashion, the song is hilariously dirty and crude. This is not a song you want to play around your family while you're opening Christmas presents unless you want them to hear Vicky singing how she wants to "nibble on your ass." Willam kicks off the song with a rap while Vicky takes up the chorus. Detox swoops in during the second verse to deliver another one of her crazy rhymes. The song overall has more of a hip-hop feel than their other music with some nice electric guitars thrown in on the chorus. Overall, it's an incredibly strong offering from the three divas, on par with their past hits 'Silicone' and 'Blurred Bynes'. You'll never think about Christmas the same way again...

'Underneath the Tree' Music Video by Kelly Clarkson

Kelly Clarkson is the Queen of Christmas this year having released her first holiday album Wrapped In Red and she has her holiday spectacular airing later this month. Kelly's Christmas music is almost as good as you can get to the classics, and she proves why she's so awesome in the music video for the first single from the LP. 'Underneath the Tree' is my Christmas jam this year, and in this live performance video Kelly belts it out with crystal clarity. The stage recreates a winter wonderland with Kelly looking stunning in a gorgeous gown. Interspersed with her performance are backstage shots where we see Kelly being her goofy self and it only enhances the video. Kelly is a delightful Christmas cookie, and she's going to make everyone's holiday this year infinitely more joyous.

'Team' Music Video by Lorde

If you've ever watched a Lorde video you're well acquainted with not really knowing what's going on half the time. Her video for 'Royals' is a bit more self-explanatory than 'Tennis Court', but not by much. For her third single 'Team', Lorde reaches out into the unknown and produces a visually striking video that is not as cut and dry as one would hope. My sense of the video is that this kid is being trafficked and in the end he tries to fight the power and get away. And then Lorde is sitting in some sort of greenhouse with what I would assume are runaways. I have no idea what any of this has to do with the subject matter of the song, but I guess it's up for interpretation. Just watch the video.

'Tropico' Short Film by Lana Del Rey

Lana Del Rey has only nudged her way into my heart recently when over the summer I finally gave her a chance and sat down to listen to her albums. I had written her off after her debacle of a performance on Saturday Night Live. What I heard astounded my ears and I have never looked back since. Lana's music is an incredible hybrid of many different styles as well as themes that we can all relate to. Her songwriting skills are other worldly and she makes me feel emotions that very few other musicians have ever done. Taking her small but powerful body of work, Lana set out to create this short film comprising of three songs from her Born to Die - The Paradise Edition that makes social commentary on American culture and incorporates biblical scripture. The piece is written entirely by Lana and features model Shaun Ross as her co-star. Let Tropico commence.
The video starts of with Lana and Shaun in the Garden of Eden as they portray Adam and Eve. They are accompanied by John Wayne, Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe and Jesus. And yes, I'm being totally serious. These figures are mentioned in her song 'Body Electric' which is the soundtrack to the first portion of the film. The video is stunningly beautiful and is my favorite portion of the film. It obviously chronicles the fall of Man as Lana takes a bite from the apple and they are immediately banished from Eden.
In the second portion, Lana channels her inner 'Gimme More'-era Britney Spears as she is a stripper in a club and Shaun is a store clerk. In the raciest and most graphic portion, Lana battles with her 'Gods & Monsters' as she is tied up with the wrong people. It culminates in Shaun's gang robbing a group of business men who happen to be in the process of being entertained by Lana's fellow strippers. They hit a low point in their lives thus causing the segue into the next portion of the film.
In the final segment of Tropico, Lana and Shaun travel into a field at sunset. Here they strip and go into the river, wearing white garments and baptizing themselves. They have decided to renounce themselves of sin as Lana's 'Bel Air' accompanies their transition. Ending the piece, the two lovers embrace and begin floating up into the air. In a strange but oddly poetic ending, UFOs appear in the distance as John Wayne's 'Always on My Mind' closes the video.
I find the video to be a stroke of genius and it's a masterpiece. Lana has done something that very few artists dare to do during their careers. This short-film is a piece of art that is going to go down in the history books. At the premiere of the film last night, Lana announced that she will be releasing a new album called Ultra-Violence. Continuing with the incredibly intelligent and reflective subject matter of her work, this title comes from the classic novel A Clockwork Orange. Even though it's probably a ways away, I honestly cannot wait to have a new Lana album in my library.

'Fix This (The Chainsmokers Remix)' by The Colourist

The Chainsmokers just never stop working it seems like! They have released yet another fantastic remix, and I think it's one of their best yet. And I love them because they're constantly introducing me to new music. This track comes from a duo called The Colourist. The duo relies on their acrobatic and playful vocals that are the magical force behind their songs, but The Chainsmokers take it a step further and mix in their always astounding production for a fun interplay between the two duos. Why not call this the "Battle of the Duos Remix?" In all honesty, The Chainsmokers' original indie house style is their forte and it rings clear and true mixed with the vocals of The Colourist for a pulsing dance track that I will have on repeat for days. And while you're dancing the night away, why not take a '#Selfie'?

We've had a list of 12 queens who were all but confirmed to be on the show since the summer when the new season was filmed, but the producers did a great job keeping a wrap on it because there are some queens making surprise appearances. I'll keep this blog post updated as more queens are Ru-vealed. Happy hunty-ing!

Those are the first five queens revealed for today. The huntying continues again tomorrow at noon so check back for all the latest updates!

'Loving You Is Easy' Music Video by Union J

Union J released their fantastic self-titled debut album a month ago, and now they have dropped the video for their third single. 'Loving You Is Easy' is one of the strongest tracks on the album and I'm so happy that it got a video. Even though it's so over-done, the boys dance on water in the new video but they make it look hot and break the norm. The boys look stunning and work their magic as they sing into the camera with their seductive stares and longing glances. While there's no plot or anything, it's a super great video to watch as the boys get soaked from head to foot. And I know I've said this a lot, but Jamie is literally perfect. That's all.

The wait is over, kittens! With the annual Hunt-y Games haven taken place over the weekend, the cast of RuPaul's Drag Race Season 6 has been assembled for the very first time in the brand new supertease for the upcoming season of Logo's most popular show. With a cast brimming with 14 gorgeous new drag queens, Season 6 promises to be the mos sickening of all. Without a doubt this is the best trailer the show has ever released with the queens showing us that reading is fundamental, they take milk baths and literally serve us tuna on a platter. What more can a boy ask for? Check out the supertease below, and make sure you go to LogoTV.com to catch up with all the queens before the season premieres in FebRUary. 'Cannonball' by Lea Michele

Glee's breakout star and the girl who's voice has been likened to that of Barbra Streisand is finally making her solo debut. Lea Michele is prepping the release of her new album Louder due out next year. The first single 'Cannonball' is written by the incomparable Sia Furler who has been working with everyone from Britney Spears and Céline Dion this year. The song is obviously written by Sia which brings me to the main criticism of the song: Lea sounds exactly like Sia and I don't hear any originality with her vocals, especially on the chorus. However, the song is a good mix of a great contemporary pop ballad and Lea's signature theatrical style. The verses are where Lea really shines and they make the song worth listening to. It definitely reminds me a lot of Céline's new album which isn't a bad thing. I'm interested to see what the rest of Louder has in store.

'Perfume' Music Video by Britney Spears

I love Britney with all my heart and I think that Britney Jeanis one of the strongest albums in her catalogue, but I will never forgive her management team for ruining what could have been an epic era. The whole era has been a mess, but the release of the 'Perfume' music video is an absolute travesty. The video was directed by Joseph Kahn whose brilliant work includes Britney's 'Stronger', 'Toxic' and 'Womanizer' music videos so we all had our expectations at an all-time high. That is until Kahn took to Twitter to tell the fans that Brit's team changed the concept of his work, rightfully so, he was furious. At the time he seemed like a drama queen but now it all makes sense. In the video for 'Perfume', Britney is seen hanging out with this guy and is having fun as she sings about marking her territory. She even whips out a bottle of her own Fantasy fragrance to seal the deal. But get this: Britney's the other woman. We then see the same shots from the beginning of the video recreated with a brunette. The video is all leading up to an epic confrontation with Britney driving in her truck. And then the video ends. Her team literally took out the climax of the video which entailed Britney holding the couple at gunpoint, killing the girlfriend and then running off her with her man. But sadly, all that was cut out and we're left with an underwhelming video. I really hope a Director's Cut is released because this is absolutely ridiculous. The one saving grace is that Britney looks flawless as always, even in her panties and bra (à la 'My Prerogative'). I'm disappointed.

'Ru Girl' by Alaska Thunderfuck

Alaska Thunderfuck was one of the break-out stars of RuPaul's Drag Race Season 5. She had a tough time because her boyfriend Sharon Needles had won the prior season and Alaska had auditioned for every season but never made it on. But when she made it on the show she won over America's hearts and was easily one of the favorites of the season. She came in second to Jinkx Monsoon, but her final challenge was easily the best. Alaska has released music in the past like 'Hooker Shoes' and 'Trannies Are Fierce', but post-Drag Race she has finally released her first song aptly titled 'Ru Girl'. It's totally not what you would expect (or maybe you did) as she crafts her first ever rap track. I think the song is one of the best a queen has ever released because it's so much fun and so clever. As you would think, the song is all about being a Ru girl and how she has this bond with the other queens that will never be broken. The bridge of the song is quite something as Alaska goes through all five seasons and lists the queens in the order they were eliminated! Memorable moments are when she gets to Shangela for the second time, and for Jinkx she simply refers to her as "some other bitch." There's a lot of clever word play going on, and I could not be more proud of Alaska. The song is available exclusively on Amazon a week early. The video for the song drops next week.

'That Christmas Song' Music Video by Detox, Willam and Vicky Vox

This week has basically been commandeered by drag queens, and I couldn't be happier. Just last week the ultimate trio DWV released their first every holiday jam. And yesterday we were finally treated to the music video. 'That Christmas Song' is one you will not be likely to forget as Detox, Willam and Vicky wear some ridiculous outfits and hair and get down and dirty with some of their gal pals. The video basically involves a big Christmas party with all their girlfriends who just end up twerking the whole time. They also recreate the now iconic 'Blurred Lines' scene (and of course their own version in 'Blurred Bynes') except now they're wearing traditional red and white outfits with a hairy half-naked Santa. It's outrageous, it's cheesy, it's everything you expect from men in dresses.

'No Better' by Lorde

Beyoncé basically eclipsed everything that happened today (and, well, everything this year) by dropping her new album BEYONCÉ last night on iTunes and instantly selling over 80,000 copies in just 3 hours. Basically she is the only thing being talked about, but let's not forget that Lorde just delivered a new song. In an odd move considering she released an album just a couple months ago, Lorde dropped a brand new single 'No Better'. The song is much more upbeat like her previous releases 'Tennis Court' and 'Team'. Lorde uses her light yet guttural vocals on this track laid over the trip-pop ballad sound that she has cleverly crafted with her album Pure Heroine. Along with her poetic lyrics this song makes for one of the most welcome surprises on the week. My brain has literally been pinging last night since Bey's sneak attack. Enjoy all this flawless music today!
